WBB | Voyageurs Gear Up for Regular Season with Preseason Games in Halifax
The Laurentian women's basketball team wrapped up their preseason with three games in Halifax. The Voyageurs fell to Dalhousie University and Saint Mary's University before closing the trip with a win over Cape Breton University.
In their first game out east, the Vees faced Dalhousie. They started strong, jumping out to a 12–2 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 23–7 run to end the first quarter. Playing from ahead, Dalhousie tightened up defensively in the second quarter, holding Laurentian to just seven points. The Tigers extended their lead to 17 at halftime after a three-pointer from Janessa Flewelling. The second half brought more of the same, as Madelyn White knocked down one of her four triples to push the Tigers' lead to 22. Laurentian improved late but ultimately fell 83–67. Cadence Pecore led the Vees with 16 points, while four Dalhousie players scored in double figures.
Against Saint Mary's, both teams started slow, with just nine points apiece in the opening quarter. Claudia Pellerin led the Vees early with five of their nine points. Offenses continued to struggle in the second quarter, as Saint Mary's took a slim 20–19 lead into halftime. The low-scoring battle carried into the second half, with points at a premium. A late layup from Evie Hargraves tied the game at 38 to force overtime, where the Huskies pulled away thanks to two clutch three-pointers from Lauren Armstrong, earning a 49–43 win.
Laurentian wrapped up their East Coast trip with a matchup against Cape Breton. Similar to their game against Saint Mary's, the Vees' offense started slowly, managing just 14 points in the first quarter — but their defense held strong, limiting the Capers to the same total. In the second quarter, Laurentian's offense came alive, exploding for 29 points to take a 16-point lead into halftime. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the Voyageurs cruised to a 17-point victory. Claudia Pellerin, Emilie Lafond, and Cadence Pecore combined for 53 points in the win, with Lafond leading the way with 20 points and eight rebounds.
The Voyageurs begin their regular season on Friday at 6pm when they host Western.
